A Journal of Ethical Foraging
What This Is
Wild Forage Canada is a journal of ethical foraging in the Canadian wilderness — what is edible, when it appears, and where you are actually allowed to pick it, region by region and season by season. It exists because the Canadian answers are genuinely hard to find: the legality of picking changes with every land boundary, and most English-language foraging content describes another country’s rules.
The Safety Standard
This site runs on rules we do not bend:
- An approved list, kept short on purpose. We only publish edible guides for species we can document conservatively. If a species is uncertain, it gets no page — absence here is a decision, not an oversight.
- Lookalikes first. Every identification page names the poisonous lookalikes and the exact marks that separate them, before any harvest or kitchen content.
- Never eat anything based on a website. Including this one. Pages support decisions; people confirm them, in person, specimen in hand.
- Sources on every page. Provincial mycological societies, poison centres, public health bodies, university extension, and the official text of the rules themselves.
- No photo identification, ever. We do not identify mushrooms or plants from photographs, and we never will.
- Illustrations are labelled. Artwork on this site is decorative and says so. Identification is taught in words and confirmed in the field.
Mushroom guides face the strictest gate of all: no mushroom gets an edible page here without review by a human expert identifier. Until then, this site covers mushrooms with legality and safety guidance only.
The Legal Layer
Canada has no single foraging law. Picking that is fine on one side of a park boundary sign is an offence on the other. Our legality guides summarize the patchwork — Parks Canada places, provincial parks, Crown land, conservation areas, municipal bylaws, private land — in plain language, with the official source linked on every claim, and a checked date on every page.
