Season Calendar by Region

The Canadian foraging year runs on five different clocks. A saskatoon on the coast is not on the same schedule as a saskatoon outside Saskatoon, so this calendar is organized by region first and species second. Pick your region, and the dots show the general harvest window for each of our approved species — the short list we cover in full, with identification and lookalikes.

Windows are general on purpose. Elevation, latitude, and the year’s weather move real seasons by weeks. Use the calendar to plan, then confirm what’s actually up, in person, where you are.

Questions

When are fiddleheads in season in Canada?

Spring, April to June depending on the region: April–May on the Pacific coast, May–June in the Interior & Mountains and the Prairies, and April–June in Central and Atlantic Canada. Each stand lasts only a few weeks.

When are saskatoons ripe?

June to July in most regions — Pacific, Prairies, Central and Atlantic — and into August in the Interior & Mountains.

When do wild blueberries ripen?

July to September in most regions; the Prairies and Central Canada finish in August.

Are these season dates exact?

No — the windows are general on purpose. Elevation, latitude and the year's weather move real seasons by weeks, so use the calendar to plan, then confirm what is actually up, in person, where you are.

Approved species only, and general windows — your region and your year will differ. Always confirm identification in person and check the rules for the exact land you are standing on.

General information only — not legal, medical, or identification advice. Never eat a wild plant or mushroom based on any website; confirm every identification in person, and check the official linked sources for the rules, which change. If you suspect poisoning, call 911 or your provincial poison centre immediately.
